Beyond Moo Baa La La La

As I shared with you in my last post I am resoluting to read (at least) 1 whole book (over 300 pages long) in 2008. I think I am ready to move past Veggie Tales and Baby Einstein, and take on a book with more than 20 words to a page! Don't get me wrong, I am still going to get my share of Bob the Tomato, Violet the Mouse, and Dr. Suess, because I very much believe that reading to children helps their verbal skills and their imaginations, it is just now after I get done reading Curious George Goes To The Beach for the 48th time this week, I am going to read a book that doesn't rhyme. 1 book may seem like a pitiful goal, but for someone who actually hasn't sat down and made time to read an entire novel in about 3 years I needed to be realistic. In a way I am going to have to retrain myself to make time for it. I am going to have to remind myself to turn the TV OFF, because House doesn't really need my help to solve his mystery disease of the night and just because I actually pick the $1,000,000 case on Deal or No Deal doesn't mean I don't have to go to work on Monday. So right now, I am on a quest... a quest for THE BOOK. And who knows, maybe if I read that book, I'll read another, and another, and join the ranks of "amazing reader of books", like my mom who "reads" a book on tape a week while she walks or my sister in law who just read the whole Harry Potter series faster than I read the just the first book. I don't aspire to do great things, I just want to try to read a grown up book.

I am up for suggestions! Anybody read something worthwhile lately. (Come on Katie let me know!)

The last book I read was "why my wife thinks I'm an idiot" which is actually a hilarious book about a metro sexual sports caster - it's an easy read and pretty humorous. I got it for Shawn and after he finished it - it was my turn. Before that the first book I read without being forced to by a professor was "What Remains a Memoir of Fate Friendship" it was a good book, don't think it's 300 pages though, probably in the high 200s. It's sad though. I'll give it to you if you want it, but my guess is Katie's your ticket to a good book! Happy Friday and have a good weekend!

I enjoyed Wicked-it's about the witches of Oz before Dorothy. And I'm reading the Devil Wears Prada and the Nanny Diaries were cute.

You MUST make cottage pie I have a great recipie if you want, tastes just like our British Grandma Joan's. And Goshawk was our street we lived on. Great little cul-de-sac with 19 houses and we knew every one! I loved it!

I recommend "The Circle Trilogy: Black, Red, White" by Ted Dekkar. Anyone who has not yet read his books I would strongly urge you to give them a try. He is a Christan author but he writes fast paced thrillers and dramas. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The first book starts with a man who finds himself trapped between reality and his dreams and he can't determine which is real and which is the dream. Both worlds are connected and he must save mankind in both worlds. But if he dies in one he will die in the other, if he fails in one he will fail in the other.

Oh dear I could recommend a lot. I loved the Traveling Pants series and those are fun easy reads. Not sure if they are 300 pages though. But other funny authors are Haven Kimmel (her memoirs), David Sedaris, and Steven Colbert's new book. If you want a more serious book I really liked The Time Travellers Wife, The Secret Life of Bees, The Other Boleyn Girl (and that whole series), and of course my favorite author is JD Salinger so anything by him. Hope that helps!! Happy Reading!! I finished Harry #7 yesterday and pretty much read it all in one day. It was awesome.

Great picks from Katie. Especially Haven Kimmel. Start with A Girl Named Zippy--funny, touching and good for reading in smaller chunks of time! For one of the most beautifully written books in the English language (not an overstatement!), try Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. For a unique story that gets you thinking, I like Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. I own many of these book, so how about a road trip to Tualatin to borrow a few?

Ooo I just checked back to see other recommendations and I second Peace Like a River. I think I need to get with Dawn, it seems we have the same taste. I'm checking out Gilead on my way home from work today!
