The Good...
These are movies they will probably get to see sooner than later, but I will probably watch them first to make sure.
Once upon a time my little brother ( who was 3 years old in 1986) called this movie "Flight of the Alligator", ahhh, so cute. I haven't seen this in years, but I really liked it. I remember loving the idea of flying around in a spaceship with a cute little alien, and being really relived when he woke up back in his normal life. I think the girls will like the talking spaceship and the little alien guy too.

I debated about putting this in the "Down Right Weird" category. But it is such a classic and has enough good weird that I decided it should be in the "Good" section. The only weird I don't like is the dream sequence that Sarah has where she ends up being in a land fill with that scary lady puppet and she takes a bite out of the rotten apple. But that is the only part that makes me not want to watch it. The rest of the weirdness is fun and quirky. I love Sir Didymus and his trusty steed. And once again I am always relieved when she wakes up at the end and everything is back to normal. This one is probably going to have to wait until the girls are at least in junior high.
The Bad...
These are movies that I will never suggest or rent. They will probably have to watch them at a slumber party in 7th grade at 2 o'clock in the morning with a bunch of goofy girlfriends.
Howard the Duck-1986
I vaguely remember watching this movie and I remember it being very dumb even at a young age. I mean seriously a talking giant duck who smokes cigars and likes women. Even watching the trailer for it hurts my head.
The Black Caldron-1985
Disney has several movies I could have done without seeing growing up, among them are Alice in Wonderland, Pinoccio, and this one. This has to be the darkest and most unfriendly Disney movie. They tried to make it cute with some sort of furry animal character with a kind of cute mostly annoying voice, but it did not save it from being unremembered.
The Down Right Weird...
These are the movies I have to admit are kind of very odd, but I watched them numerous times and they still go down as being some of my favorite childhood movies. They are actually movies I look back at now as a parent and go "hmmm, did my mom preview this movie before I watched it 20 times?" The girls will eventually get to watch these, if they want to, I guess.
The Last Unicorn-1982
I watched this movie A LOT! When I was 8 or 9 we would go to the video store and pick a movie this was usually the one I chose. I was feeling nostalgic a couple of years ago and bought it. I was kind of stunned as I watched it, there is apparently a lot my 9 year old brain didn't grasp. Don't get me wrong it is a good movie, just weird! There is a big vulcher with ...knockers, a tree that comes to life with ....big knockers, a really scary witch, an eerie singing butterly that looks like Elton John, a skeleton that drinks, and a giant flaming red bull that chases all of the unicorns into the ocean just to name a few of the things that should have deterred me from wanting to watch this movie repeatedly at such a young age. I think I kept coming back to it because the unicorn was really pretty and the theme song done by the band America was pretty. Violet found this movie on the shelf one night and I couldn't let her watch it. Instead I let her watch the Princess Bride, for the first time. =)

I think I saw this movie on accident one time, because there is NO WAY I would have purposefully picked this one out at the movie store. But when I did see it it must have triggered some deep down scifi nerd in me because I remember really liked it and watched it many many times. All I remember about it is all of the aliens were named John, the girl in the movies name was Penny and she wore a pretty dress, and there was a guy with white hair who was really cute. I watched the trailer on Youtube for this movie, and all I can say is...hmmmm. Interesting. My girls will probably never want to see this movie, and they do not have an uncle who will rent it and have it playing in the background when they go over and play at his house. So thank you either Uncle Chester or Uncle Boyd for this memory. =)
If you want to see the weirdness...go here......

As I was doing this project I found that most of the movies I remember as a kid I put under the "Good" list making it way longer than either of the other two options. That means I either I have very bad taste in movies, or the 80's and 90's produced a lot of really good movies, or my parents just did an excellent job of shielding me from the bad ones. I like to think it's the second reason.

You totally just brought back a FLOOD of memories! What were we thinking? Ahh to be a child in the 80's. It's a wonder we turned out so normal. What's that movie we used to watch at Leann's house all the time. It had Kroll the cyclopse in it I think? Also, Willow! And The Never Ending Story! I have a feeling if I watched that one now it would be really crazy. Good times!
My parents let me see Psycho when I was in Jr. High. I remember it being REALLY scary. I had to get up and go to the lobby at one point because I just couldn't take it. And there was actually a shower scene with Janet Leigh. That was considered very risque. But when I saw it again when I was in my 40s, I found it laughable. Love, Mom
