He did not take this one, but this is the ship that all of the next pictures are related to. Grandpa was in the Navy, and spent his time in the Navy on this ship, the USS Crane (DD 109).

Here he is with some of his shipmates on board the USS Crane. Grandpa is the one on the very right.If I understand the story correctly, (correct me if I'm wrong father) this is part of the initiation when you cross the international date line for the first time. Either that or you have way too much time on your hands after being stuck on a boat with a bunch of guys for months and months.
I love this one. It just captures the 1940's era of young sailors in the Navy for me. The sepia tone of the picture, with the ships, tatoos, cigarettes, and sailor hats. And my grandpa was probably behind the camera looking the exact same way. LOVE IT!

I really do check your blog every day. But this blog didn't show up on Grandmas computer until Wednesday. Who knows what goes on in computer land. Oh well, I'm glad I finally got to see this one.
